But in the early ones, the Papillons, Vladar goes one step further as a pianist, lets the bass crackle, sharpens contrasts and indulges in a joy of playing that allows this work to step out a little from the shadows of the two more mature ones.

Reviews:
After more than a decade in which Johannes Brahms had not composed anything for the solo piano, he returned to his instrument in 1892. This great tone poet of German Romanticism was almost sixty years old at the time - and disappointed in life. Nevertheless, the piano cycles opp. 116, 118 and 119 with their intermezzi, capriccios and ballads reflect more than just resigned moods. Each of the 17 piano pieces seduces in its melancholy, in its austere beauty.
